Introducing Okanagan artist Debby Merkel

Meet Debby Merkel, a multimedia artist based in Kelowna, British Columbia, whose unique approach combines meticulous planning with spirited execution. 

Debby’s artistic journey is a celebration of abstract expression, capturing emotions and her inner world through a distinct creative process. Each piece begins with a deliberate framework—whether it's the intricate mosaic patterns of her "Girlfriend" paintings, crafted by layering and then selectively revealing colors beneath, or other innovative techniques that she masterfully employs.

Debby's art has evolved from initial experiments with watercolor to a mastery of realism in acrylics, and now to embracing a bold, unrestrained style. After a six-year hiatus, she rediscovered her passion for art through an inspiring online workshop, which rekindled her commitment to continual learning and exploration.

An active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, the Kelowna Palette Club, and On The Edge Collective, Debby thrives in both solitary creation and community art projects, finding joy and inspiration in collaboration. Her work not only demonstrates her technical skill but also her ability to engage deeply with her materials and her audience, making each piece a gateway to shared experiences and emotions.
